Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 currently serves more than 8,000 students who reside primarily in the City of Elmhurst, Illinois (USA) and small portions of neighboring Oak Brook, Bensenville and Addison. At present, District 205 maintains one Early Childhood Education Center, eight elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school.

District 205’s Challenge

In 2011, District 205 underwent a process to reevaluate its curriculum to ensure that they are offering a thorough, rigorous and integrated approach to the STEM basics.  The first step was to review the activities currently used in lessons and identify how they are STEM focused.  In order to ensure that the District is providing the foundation of STEM that will be important in the future, it decided to align the STEM curriculum with the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS), which defines 6 critical skill areas for students:

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Research and Information Fluency
  • Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making
  • Digital Citizenship
  • Technology Operations and Concepts

A high-performing district, Elmhurst 205 has always had a strong math and science program in its middle schools and after incorporating engineering design into its labs, the District sought a technology component to pull the science, math, and engineering together into one cohesive application.

Utilizing the data logging technology and magnitude of sensors available, NOVA5000 delivers real-time performance and increased student hands-on engagement while experimenting with complex activities that otherwise could not be performed.

The Fourier Education Solution

In 2012, Fourier Education’s NOVA5000 computerized science lab was chosen to be the “T” in the District’s STEM curriculum. The NOVA5000 answered three key requirements for adoption by the District:

  • The NOVA5000 data logger is uniquely suited to both the math and science classroom
  • The NOVA5000 is bundled with labs that can be seamlessly integrated into already existing labs
  • Fourier Education provided dedicated and invaluable support for the District during implementation.

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 introduced Fourier Education’s NOVA5000 Data Logger, MultiLab Data Analysis Software, sensors and curriculum books at each of the District’s three middle schools, enabling students to conduct research, analyze data, and problem- solve in a more hands-on, realistic manner.

As District 205 Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit corporation that supports the district’s efforts to enhance inquiry-based science and math labs, it has raised funds to provide additional NOVA5000 devices for additional science and math classes.
